Sticks and Sand

If I had a stick in the sand
And I was to draw a line
To show how much I loved you,
It would reach from where you stand,
Around the beach,
Across the waters,
Through towns of no names, and
Through cities that never sleep.
It would jump over houses
Where sleeping babies lie, and
Where those who used to be small infants
Turn in their sleep.
It would duck into bottomless chasms, and
Over unreachable and undiscovered heights.
It would pass thorough well tended gardens, and
Patches of stubborn moss on north-side rocks.
It would pause at miracles, and
Speed past war and pain.
Through the rain, and
The snow, and
The burning sun,
The line I draw would continue.
Until it reaches the back of your feet
As you wait so patiently for me,
To complete the circle,
The circle that never ends.
That is how much I love you.
